Healthy skin, nails, and hair blossom at Magnolia Dermatology. A Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Neelam Patel, accomplishes this by providing medically-managed care that you can trust. In addition to her advanced training, Dr. Patel has invested in state-of-the-art technologies to target hair loss. This combination of expertise and onsite capabilities supports only the best treatment to stimulate hair growth. And our neighbors in the Clarksville, Tennessee area can enjoy a renewed look and so much more in just five steps with our sophisticated approach.
During this initial visit, Dr. Patel will thoroughly evaluate the root cause of your thinning hair. She’ll discuss when you first noticed that your hair was falling out or thinning and ask you other questions to determine any factors that may be responsible. No consultation would be complete without examining your scalp. Further testing may be ordered to isolate potential nutritional deficiencies or thyroid-/hormone-related conditions commonly associated with hair loss. You may be a candidate for treatment at our clinic with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). This therapy can be life-changing for individuals with different types of hair loss – from the autoimmune disease alopecia areata to stress-induced and age-related hair loss. It is a safe, less costly, and less invasive alternative to hair transplantation surgery.
If PRP therapy is right for you, our team will provide clear, thorough, and tailored directions on what to expect (and what to do) throughout this process. Pre-care is generally minimal; you will be asked to avoid using NSAIDs like ibuprofen, Advil, and hair dyes for a specific time leading up to your procedure. We advise that you have a full, nutritious meal and drink plenty of fluids (non-alcoholic) in the lead-up to treatment. Please set aside around 45 to 60 minutes for treatment.
PRP is not a product that we buy from a manufacturer. It is a “product” that we prepare at our office, derived from your own blood. Our skilled and highly qualified team will gently draw a small amount of blood, typically from a vein on the inner side of your elbow. The blood is then applied to a centrifuge machine. This machine spins vigorously to separate the different components of your blood. The idea is to concentrate the platelets in the plasma fluid. These platelets contain the “active ingredients” to accelerate hair growth and slow the process of hair loss: growth factors. The function of such special proteins is to trigger tissue regeneration and healing at the cellular level. Once the area of your scalp to be treated is fully numbed via local anesthetic and/or cooling, we inject this powerhouse “cocktail” into the tissues that could use it the most. The injections themselves only take a few minutes.
While there is no downtime associated with PRP for hair loss, it is important to adhere to instructions for after-care (just as you did for pre-treatment/step No. 2). These directions largely involve avoiding intense exercise and physical activities for the first couple of days. Also, avoid excessive heat and exposure to UV light from the sun. These behaviors/factors can increase your risk of complications like bruising. We also encourage our patients to enjoy foods containing healing and anti-inflammatory properties, such as zinc-containing legumes, magnesium-rich whole grains and leafy greens, and B Vitamin-rich dairy. Lastly, touching the treated area in the hours following treatment can increase the risk of bleeding and infection. Don’t. Also, avoid wetting your hair, using hair products, and don’t take hot showers for some time, as specified by Dr. Patel.
There can be considerable variations in when and how much of a difference PRP makes in the thickness and overall appearance of the hair. Be patient. It can take a few months to notice an improvement in the treated areas. But, once your goal has been achieved, maintenance will be minimal. After an initial series of around one injection every four to six weeks (for three to six months), you can maintain your results with quarterly treatments.
